I've just put the 2110 in my '71 kombi and am having some trouble setting the timing.
It has a Mallory single point distributor on it.
I static set the timing at about 5 deg BTDC.
It started fine and seemed to be running Ok.
When I hooked up my timing light the numbers on the pulley wheel were very blurry- I can tell it's somewhere between 5-10 deg BTDC but the numbers aren't at all clear- infact the only way I know its TDC is because the writing is much bigger than the numbers.
It is a cheap and new timing light, but i've always had cheap ones and the numbers were always very clear.
I checked that the spark occured at roughly the right spot but haven't set the points gap- this is largely because i don't know where to set it.
I also have to bed in the new cam so don't want to drive it to the shop and have it looked at.
So, can any one suggest
Why the numbers would be very blurry?
What is the point gap of a Mallory single point unit?
Could I bed in the cam in the knowledge that it's about right, then take it to a shop that knows more than I?
Should i just fork out the extra cash and get a good timing light vainly hoping it's the lights problem?
I assume you are using a stroboscopic timing light? If so, then the blur indicates that the light flashes are not a multiple/division of the pulley revolutions....
If you have already started the motor and didn't imeediately run the cam in ie keep the revs up continuously above 2000 rpm for 10-20mins then you've already failed to run the cam in and have reduced the life of your cam.
How long have you run the motor in total so far?
How many times have you started it so far? If you have only started and run it for a very very short time like under 30 seconds etc. Then you may be able try running it in on the next start up, but the life of your cam has already been shortened.
Did your engine builder not tell you about running the cam in immediately on start up?
