Painting by Roller-Posted this on AVD and a couple of other forums approx 18 months ago- it still continues-now 60+ pages of posts.
I bought the proper rollers etc about 18 months ago but haven't got round to doing it. Tried it on van and it looked good and that was a auto spray laquer
I am seriously thinking about it. Two issues I would want to check out are;
1. How easy is it to remove if you end up wanting a normal paint job down the track (i.e. if you bugger up the application with the roller)?
2. I imagine most of the cost of 'painting a car' is preparation and between coat sandings etc. Given I would still need to have someone do that, how much would I actually be saving?
It is a very hard finish if you read all the links- it can be sanded back to paint by spray.
Tremclad has an agent in Australia but he only sells a few lines, mainly to mining area, and when I spoke to him was not interested in taking any orders.
There is a UK supplier who will send to Australia but expensive for freight.
The Rustproof paints mentioned- but not hammer finish- are closest in Australia.
One that I have been advised and I have used with both brush and spray many moons ago is "agricultural paint" which is used to paint tractors, headers and other hard use agricultural equipment.
Very hard wearing but you would have to pick your colour as you cannot get it colour matched to Kombi or so I have been told by my local country supplier. Perhaps you could mix a couple of colours and get someting you like but keep record of proportions.
There is some great reds, creams and greens in agri equipment.
PPG -formally Dulux- can supply the correct rollers and tray- they are approx 100mm wide and cost about $24 for 10.
They are listed in phone book or Telstra pages on the Telstra site. _________________ Kombis Keep you Younger
You can go through the step by step sections or go straight to his website
which is set out with all info inclusing quantities.
Remember his quantities are US but easily re-calculated.
Unless you need a show car finish this looks very good- if you use you Kombi for camping and off road it seems ideal.
Maybe wrong but had idea that "Moneypenny" found some Tremclad in Tassie hardware store. I think they are in middle of shifting after selling house etc.

This is link from MX-5 Forum from guy in Victoria who painted his MX-5.
It also brought back info I received over 12 months ago from UK that boat/yacht paint is excellent for rollers.
I would also point out that the rollers on this site are not as good as PPG rollers.
