Hi,

Im in the process of building my engine, and am getting mixed info on what the heads should be torqued to.

I've head:

23 pounds for pre 73 engines
18 pounds for post 73 engines
and also 26 from the guy who used to work for Peter (can't remember his name) and now is with VW jon in Osborne Park.

Any ideas people?   Its a new Brazilian Case so can't figure it out.

Thanks all.

1700-1800-2000   1973 onwards 21.7 ftlbs
Scientific Publications

John Muir     36hp   26 ft.lbs
            All others  23 ft.lbs

Autobooks
1600 cc     21-22 ft.lbs
Later Type 4 motors 23 ft.lb

Haynes   23 ft.lbs

I would be going for 23 ft.lbs slowly in correct order and possibly 1lb at a time from about 18ft. lbs.

Clymers & InterEurope also say 23 ft.lbs
and recommend initial torque at 7 ft.lbs

I've found more info.

So, 10mm threads = 23 pounds.  With stages of 7, and 15
But if you've 8mm threads = 18 pounds, again with stages of 7 and 13

Cheers for the help.
