Hey all,

Have a 72 bus with stock 1600 dp, at the moment, and want to get an exhaust system that will give me a few more horses and a deeper, growlier sound. But nothing rediculous like stinger exhaust sound haha.

What does everyone reccomend? I've been told thunderbird headers with quiet pack is a good one. I like the look of a dual quiet pack, but I don't know if they are growly enough? Also heard A1 phatboy muffler is fairly decent so I really am in a pickle haha.

any thought apprecieted

Cheers

Josh

Quiet packs are OK but a hot dog or phat boy would give you a good growl.

Phat boys are hard to fit on bays. They generally also come with slightly bigger diameter pipe which you don't really need on a 1600. Well it's really the merged header that doesn't fit. You need a new engine mount fabricated to get it to fit. Which is a pain. Sadly the merged header is the good bit of the system that squeezes the extra hp out.

If you have the other non std header you will get a little more hp though.

hmm i've heard some after market systems can be a dogy fit, but others aren't too bad. Have you heard of / had any experience with the thunderbird brand. I'm thinking of perhaps using the thunderbird header with a phat boy muffler. what do you think?

I like the thunderbird header i had on my Baja years ago, but i haven't been able to find one for a type 1 motor. I heard they stopped making them.

I've put a Phat boy and merged headers on my '71 with a great amount of difficulty. There is one system that works, it's a bugpack powermax or something. If you want to have a look at mine you are more than welcome.

I believe the A1 sidewinder is a good option. I haven't tried it and can't find a good picture

This is the most common kind of header that fits with the rear engine mount.

Now we know where you are-when you get a chance put your location in Profile- we have lots of members in SE Q'land.

If you phone Mick tell them you were referred by KK.

Thanks
