Hey its me again, i have a massive problem with my clutch.
I had a mechanice out today and he said that the reason my car wouldnt go into gear, was because the clutch has had it and needs a replacement which involves dropping the engine. He said its gonna take two days and cost $900 bucks. My other mechanic (who is in hospital) says that he is ripping me off, and the job isnt that time consuming. The cars only problem is that while the engine is running the gearstick wont stay in the gears, once you push it in it pops back out or it wont even go into the gear at all. I was just wondering if anyone has any advice as to what i can do to get her up and running as soon as possible. If anyone has any good mechanics who have dealt with this problem or any specalist shops or even any ideas at all as to what i can do would be most appreciated thanks.

Suggest you phone some shops in our Recommended etc section.

Not sure of current clutch prices but should be around $200 complete and only few hours labour max.

The actual job of replacing the clutch isn't that hard really, as long as you have a few people and tools etc.

Keep trying different shops and see what the best price you can get is.

Sounds like you also have gearbox problems in the selector part.
The engine out/ engine in is straight forward and should not take more than 3 hours (after a bit of practice) with the right gear.
If you are thinking of doing it yourself (Zen and the art of working on your kombi), then it may be worth considering changing the rear seal in the transmission and the front seal on the engine (you'll need to remove the flywheel).
Take the flywheel to the clutch place so they can inspect it as may need some machining done on the clutch face.
With a helping hand, trolley jack and preferably car ramps (for clearance to get the engine out from under the car) it should all be done in a day.
The gear box is another matter, but at least you can drive the car to a mechanic.
