Having had to drill some tiny holes in solid German steel lately and magic Chinese manufactured drill bits not up to standard-not even into genuine Aussie hardwood I resorted to an old tip my father taught me.
I used appropriate sized nails- also not late model nails but some that go back 30-40 years from my fathers collection and made in Australia.

Worked wonders- if you have a gympie and something you can use as an anvil you can even reshape points. Smile

For good quality drill bits, I use the "gold coloured bits" available through Blackwoods or Rudds or Tool Mart etc.
And another tip is to use cutting lubricant, there is one we use called Ideal, from USA. this clear liquid works wonders, or Trefolux paste.
