On 1600 engines with single PICT type carburettor there is a small cap similar to a core plug approx 90 degrees opposite throttle shaft which can pop out. This causes engine to stop and/or backfire badly.
It is just a cap used to close hole used for drilling/machining carb during production.
They do come loose.
Solution is to clean hole and put adhesive/sealing compound (D3) on face and replace and then peen.
D3 adhesives are those used in woodwork and are waterproof /resistant.
You can also glue a 1 cent piece over the cap with superglue or similar.
Will take pic later and post
